Lyrics to "A Lifetime Without You" |

Yo, Doc! (or Cynthia)
I'm lookin' for lyrics to "A Lifetime Without You." Either one of you desire to shoot them my way? I've got the bulk, but there are few places at which I'm stuck.

I sent what I had your way. Use them as a loose interpretation though.

I got off-track doing this but let's see if I can get back on track.
WE ALL GONNA FACE THE RISING SUN
This immediately brings to mind the O Death song from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. I keep picturing a group of old black men singing this song and I have to keep reminding myself that it's Mike dubbing himself.
I really enjoy the execution of this song (not that I know how the original sounds). I like the way the different vocals are not always quite in synch with each other which gives it a very authentic feel.
While normally I'd probably would run away screaming from a song of this style, I actually really like it and it's one of my favorites from the album.
SATAN YOUR KINGDOM MUST COME DOWN
Yes! A rocker! This this the brother of I'm Gonna Run to the City of Refuge. The gritty voice adds to the down-in-the-dirt feel of the song. Some cool guitar wailing going on here too.
If this song is to the City of Refuge on the Holy Ghost Building album, then I would love, love, love to hear a modern, fully electric version a'la City of Refuge on Fun with Sound. I think the Fun with Sound version of Refuge is one of the best songs the the Mike canon. So I can only imaging what would happen if the same treatment were given to Satan Your Kingdom...

Thanks, everyone, for the comments and posts on this thread -- you guys are the true hardcores that pay attention to the details.
As per usual, I have not held up my end of the deal by doing the final edit on both the HGB and WAGFTRS lyric sets, but since I'm gonna be stuck up at my sister's pad in Seattle for the week after Christmas, I will have some time and space to finally sit down and work on all this.
Here's wishing you guys a wonderful Chrimbo tide and a Merry Goo Year -- I sure hope it goes better than this year (at least financially), although I have to say that God carried me through 2009 and broke some things through for me personally that were hanging me up, so I am looking forward to seeing more good things happening in 2010 despite the usual evils and cares of life -- those are a given. What our Lord does for us in between is where the magic happens. I love you all ~~ DOC |
...and a Happy Chrimbo to you too. That looks like Toodles on your right. Who's the other guy?

Holy Crap, Batman!
I just googled Ping Pong Over the Abyss. There are a TON of pirates out there with torrents of the 123 Box set. That's GOTTA suck!

I have to say in defense of those "illegal downloaders" that the 123 box has been out of print for many years and fetches a premium price on ebay. There are no other options at the present time for someone to hear these albums.
For the record, I own 3 copies of the 123 box set.

I've always found it weird how just not having something until you can legitimately never seems to be an option. We're in the age where everyone must own everything they want.. unless of course its a Porsche or something where they could do jail time.
My position is always artist's wishes first... but if folks find themselves in a position where they have no option other than to rip it off, the least they could do is send some money to Mike & co (and NO money to the pirate).

EXACTLY, and this was the same thing I said on the other message board. It is the digital age where people are comfortable taking what DOESN'T belong to them simply because it is easy, and they could at least send the money to the artist with just the click of a button on paypal. I challenged someone on the other board to do this, never heard a response back... sending money is just as easy as the download. Out of print or not doesn't matter in my opinion, if folks will take out of print items, then I believe they will take the new ones as well. Illegal file sharing is theft, and I don't see how to call it anything else.

Wow, Tootle, Roe, and Proctor together. Amazing. If only Jan Eric were there...
I have wanted to see Roe/Tootle/Eric/Smith together live for the past 22+ years. The closest I ever came was in Columbus, OH, I don't recall the precise year. The 77's played at King's Place (I think that was the name of the venue). By that time Dave L (and maybe Mark, I don't recall at present) was in the band but Jan made an appearance and they played The Lust, The Flesh, The Eyes, and The Pride of Life together. It was a pleasant surprise as my friend and I had driven from Cincinnati to Wheaton to see them the night before. Having Jan show up for the Columbus show was a treat.
Speaking of those two shows, this was the first time I'd ever heard Phony Eyes as this was after the release of Sticks & Stones and, I believe, just before the release of Pray Naked. The song was fabulous live, gave me chills. I'll never forget the first time I heard Mike go into the instrumental break which segues (sp?) into a guitar solo. Wow.
Mike - what was it like back in the days of Ping Pong, All Fall Down, and the self-titled release on Island Records? Was there a lot of excitement in the band? Was there a time when it seemed like the band was destined for large stadiums and sold out shows across the country? I'd have loved to be around back then to experience some of that - but I was between 9 and 13 during those years, so it wasn't to be. I'll go to my grave with your songs having been a part of my childhood, teenage years, and adulthood, all the while knowing it is a shame that the first three records did not propel you guys into the stratosphere. From the articles I've read it seems you've made peace with the road you've traveled, and artistically perhaps it helped keep you honest, but what I wouldn't give to have been there during the early years and even more to have seen you guys hit it big.
If ever there is a Tootle/Eric/Smith reunion show anywhere in the continental US I will fly out to see it.
Back to reality...if you don't mind me asking, what were the three of you doing together recently (the picture appears fairly recent to me)? It seems at one point you and Tootle were on the outs, but recall reading that was resolved to some degree. How is he doing? And Mark Proctor? Jan Eric? Aaron Smith? I realize you cannot spill their personal lives on this message board, but I would be as interested in hearing how they are each doing as I would be in hearing precisely what they are doing.
