Yeah...probably is....I dunno. I didn't tape it....didn't tape any of this stuff....don't know why people did or didn't do this or that when they taped it.

Got the dvd on wednesday, finished watching the next morning. Couple of things of note. On my cheap tv and dvd player, the audio and video don't always line up, escecially on the different kind of light and mercy, mercy video's. On the computer dvd player it all lines up perfectly, I figure others might be having the same thing happen, this is not a complaint.... believe me, I understand what a Monster job this had to have been. The only other things... I was really hoping for more of the history of the band being talked about, you know, maybe a "Behind the Music" type thing without all the drama.. The stuff that Mike writes in the booklet is awesome. The 77's are a part of my life, and I've been following them for 22 years now, ever since I became a christian and a friend gave me Ping pong because it was too controversial for him.. lol When Mike talks about or writes about or gives his version of the bands history.. It is awesome stuff. I've felt all the pain, disappointment, joy and essence of this band through the years. But being in Pennsylvania, I only got to know so much. I was really hoping to get more insight out of Mike and the others.

We all know that the 77's are the greatest "Christian" rock group that ever almost was.. If you love them, then you know what I mean. They've meant alot to me throughout my life and they have been a true blessing the whole time.

I see now the problems you had with "Woody". That was my only other big miss. But that's what being a 77's fan is all about. It's just like life, joy, sorrow, brilliance, controversy, faith, hope, Love.... and truth. Thank you soooo much for this DVD... selah..

The only thing I can tell you, and it's the honest truth and not me being defensive as the producer, is that the issues you are seeing have everything to do with the "cheap dvd player" and not the DVD. If it were the DVD it wouldn't sync on your computer "perfectly". Some of this has to do with the fact that we used Dolby digital processing for the audio....and on a really cheap DVD player this will sometimes cause a slight lag as the DVD player processes the audio signal....but it isn't a "problem" with the DVD.

Last week I bought the re-release of the U2 DVD "live in Sydney". They used the same digital audio processing we did, and on the cheapest DVD player we have, when you play the DVD the audio is a half second off for the entire concert. Every other player it's dead on....(we have 5 here in the office).

So there you go...

Thanx Jeff, and yes, that was my point. I figured it was the quality of the dvd player. I just figured others might read these posts wondering the same thing. Once again, thanx for the great job you all did..

I most definitely dig my 77's DVD set. The only thing that would make it better, is to have Mike, Mark Harmon, Bruce, David, Aaron, Jan, Mark Proctor, and Mark Tootle autograph it.

Most "fan" videotapes were shot with hand-held amateur video equipment, so the sound will be a result of the camera mic they were using. It would be a rare occurance for us to have a quality soundboard of the same show, although that may have been the case on one or two of these? I doubt it. Even it is was, synching an audio tape to a video tape is a nightmare due to time smear and drift between two disparate pieces of technology. I'll let Jeff explain that one in more detail.....

I think the only soundboard source we had to sync with footage was the "Safe As Milk" show....otherwise, whatever audio that was on the video tape was what we had to work with. Why people didn't have soundboard audio to go along with their video? Probably has everything to do with almost everything on the live part of the DVD was more or less filmed for private collections. I don't think anyone filming this stuff probably ever figured it would end up on some big official comp.....not to mention that the live footage spans like 20 years, and the options and ease and affordability of equipment for soundboard recordings was a lot different than it is today....so as far as I know they just don't exist.

jeffrey k.

Yep, that "safe as milk" show was us. Part of the reason is as whats been stated, it was merely intended as a record of where we were that night. For just us to watch. Never thought anything would ever come of the tape. If we had thought that we would of used a lot better equipment. The other part of the reason is that it was Cornerstone and back in the day we would film a lot of shows and lug around a lot of junk. Which getting a soundboard would of just added to the work. And the last part of the reason is, at the time I don't believe we knew we could even plug in to the board at Cornerstone.

Lining up audio to video is a pain, we did a huge amount of that in the DA Buechners DVD. It can be a nightmare durring editing because things can get slid out of place. And as we had, VOB errors can show up in manufacturing later that cause audio that looked lined up on our master to go out of wack again. Currently we are doing it again with the DA cornerstone 2000 show.

That is entirely a seperate thing than the dolby/older DVD player thing is. I had an old DVD player that would not play the Matrix at all, because its a double layer DVD which was not around at the time my old DVD player was made. Its a compatability issue.

The 77s DVD, is a beautiful archive of some of the best of the best footage. A must have.

...last Wednesday, actually (9/27/06) a the Lost Dogs concert in Portland. I watched the first DVD all the way through Saturday night with my family (most of them, most of the time). Like Cragstar, I am so interested in the history...I ate up Mike's notes...the TV spot of Exit Records...(until about 10 years ago, I had the CCM issue in the early 80's that talked about Exit)...and it dawned on me later on that there were very few "to the camera" moments with all the other band members, past and present. (That probably would've taken the set in a whole different direction, though.) The history is important because the 77's (repeating what most of us have said repeatedly) are a part of *our* history. PLEASE don't get me wrong. The DVD is GREAT! I really like the little things, like the DVD menus, the layouts...EVERYTHING about the DVD set is great! Perhaps in a few years there could be a Volume 2 with more in-depth history-type stuff...like a personnel-to-album-release timeline graphic...??? Thinking out loud here...

Hope this didn't sound like a complaint...definitely some things I'd hoped would delved into greater depth...but again, perhaps as fodder for Vol. II...STILL A FANTASTIC DVD SET, and I'm SO SO glad I own a copy.

Thumb Up! CT reviews the 77s DVD Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

77's
DVD (Lo-Fidelity)

The Good:
Newly unearthed—two DVDs worth of material from the '80s and '90s by one of CCM's most revered and underground rock bands. All of the "official" music videos from Mike Roe and company are here, as well as a hodgepodge collection of concert footage, plus Roe's 70-minute performance with Safe as Milk at the '97 Cornerstone Festival. Nostalgia abounds with rare clips (check out Pat Boone making like Casey Kasem), plus an accompanying booklet with musings from Roe, all commemorating a legendary band with a rebellious artistic spirit sorely missing in today's Christian rock.

The Bad:
Most of the footage is amateur quality, some of it is much worse, and oddly enough, it doesn't improve with time either. There's a dated, campy quality to some of it—usually intentional—making it hard for newcomers to latch onto the classic music.

The Bottom Line:
Fans of the band will consider this a treasure trove, and it makes an interesting time capsule for CCM historians. The appeal is limited to those audiences, but I'm thankful that it exists.
– Breimeier
(Available exclusively from www.lo-fidelity.com and www.77s.com.)

I was watching the DVD again this weekend and continued to take notes to write my 'big review'. I then decided against it for the sake of time. So, in lieu of that, I'd like to just say that this DVD is FANTASTIC! I love the whole thing. The early stuff is quite funny, especially some of those videos. Elvis Parsley ... nuff said.

This is simply a MUST have! I do find myself playing that Cornerstone gig alot.

Pick it up now - what are you waiting for! Lo-Fi comes through yet again!
