Is it possible to get copies of the fan club releases somewhere? I can't figure out how to lay my hands on "Roesbuds", "Happy Chrimbo" and "Guilty Pleasures". I'd be thankful for any suggestions.

Hi all, I'm new to the forum. I've been wondering about fan club releases myself since I joined a while ago, I have HC but not the others and I can't recall the terms of membership, i.e., yearly cost, etc. What are the terms?

Not that I am aware of, other than eBay.

I have HC and GP - that I got while a fan club member, but I nevr got Roesbuds.

I was watching it on eBay once but forgot to get in on the bidding until it was too late.

2nd Mike Roe Fan Release Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

The Mike Roe fan club still owes its members the second CD (the first being Roesbuds). I was thinking about what would make it an awesome release when I fumbled across Alternative Records' discography, a copy of which I happened to save before it was removed from the Internet.

In the discography, Randy Layton details how he released a Mike Roe/Larry Tagg song called "Save It" on an Alternative Records Summer Sampler. Mike also mentioned a while back that it was one song from an entire unreleased album that Mike and Larry did back in the '80s.

So ... Mike! How 'bout it? Wanna release the Roe/Tagg album as your 2nd official fan release?

Here's a quote from a CCM interview:

"I made a number of recordings years ago with Larry Tagg from Bourgeois Tagg...There's an album in the can, literally, that maybe I'll put out one day for fun. The song "Tattoo" came from that collaboration."

And from a RadRockers interview:

"Actually, there's a whole album, called The Magnates, that I recorded with Mike Urbano (also from Bourgeois Tagg) and Larry Tagg. We may release that at sometime ... I liked working with Larry. It was hard for me to sing Larry's stuff—just a different style and all. We phrased things differently. We've written some stuff together ... we even sent a demo of "Tatoo" to Billy Idol—thought we'd see if he might want it. We've shopped a couple other things as well."

Com'on, Mike! You know you wanna release that bad boy ... a whole album full of "Tattoo"-like songs? Just thinking about it makes me wanna get a tatoo like Keith Davis!

RE: The "MagNATES"?? Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

It was the MAGNETS, by the way, featuring the great Mike Urbano, who is now drummer and manager of Smash Mouth. We recorded together last year on the Bourgeious Tagg cut off of Charlie Peacock's 'all friends reunion' album or whatever, and he's still great. At one point he was the drummer on several Top 30 singles all at once, including ones by Third Eye Blind and Sheryl Crow. Jeez. I should have kept him around longer. Even Bruce worships the guy, and Bruce is the best drummer in the world (tied with Aaron Smith) so there you go.

Sadly, this Magnets stuff wasn't recorded all that great -- the drums sound like tin cans -- and the material is fairly weak, in my opinion. Only 8 tunes were cut too, the best of which have already been released, I think......

It might be fun someday to drag it out and re-mix it. Maybe I can get Layton to pony up some dough to do it properly, but I'm not all that excited about it. If it were all that great I would have put it out by now.

I would much rather release the early live 77's concerts from 1980 and 1981, some of which can be heard at the end of the Ping Pong Over The Abyss CD. We've got three great concerts from that period and I can't wait to mix those and put out a double CD of it all. Hopefully someday in the near future. That stuff is
way better than The Magnets by a long shot. We were a pretty hot band back when we were the Scratch Band. The songs from that period were iffy, but we played them as if they were the greatest songs in the world. We were very passionate in those days -- go check out those Ping Pong bonus cuts for a sample of what's in the can.

Why not do both?

Remix and release the "Magnets" stuff as a fan CD, and go on working on the Scratch Band live recordings. I'd like to have both.

By the way, "Tattoo" doesn't deserve to be labeled "weak material".

Alex

Ooops.....I meant the unreleased material was weak, not the stuff we released. Tattoo is one of our better songs, and as I said, I would not have released it if it was crap. I'm just not so sure about the rest of the Magnets' stuff, but it's ok enough to put out, I guess. We just don't have the money or support to do as many of these special projects as we once did, but who knows...

So the recordings didn't turn out so well...what's Larry Tagg up to these days? Schedule a little recording session?

Interesting reading this...I've been watching that weekly show "Hit Me Baby 1 More Time", that's brought back The Knack, The Motels, Howard Jones, Wang Chung, and more...I've been hoping for a Bourgeois Tagg reunion. I still have their self-titled cassette with "Mutual Surrender" on it...ahh, 1986 saw some of the best 80's music released...

Ping Pong Over The Abyss CD Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

I think I misunderstood. Mike, did you say that there is live Scratch Band recordings from 1980 and 1981 on the Ping Pong Over the Abyss album? If so, this must be a "hidden track" - I have the first 3 CD's that were released as a box set in about 1995 through VIA and I don't think I ever heard this - of course, I didn't know to look for it. I found out out about the hidden track w/r/t the story and conversation between Mike and Charlie Peacock on "All Fall Down" after the fact too, so I suppose it's possible!

IN ANY CASE, I'd love to have the live Scratch Band/77's recordings or even music that predates this... Mike, would you consider going back to your musical beginnings for the Roesbuds fan club? For example, do you have anything in recorded form by "The Brotherhood" or any other musical ventures? I would never have heard of "The Brotherhood" except by reading the Sacramento News/Review article, by the way. Very interesting...
