Cabins and Trees Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

I thought I'd start a little thread related to the title of the new, soon-to-be-released CD: The Lost Cabin and the Mystery Trees, or TLCATMT for short.

Do you have any good cabin stories?

What are your favorite trees?

or vise versa.

Lord, build me a cabin... Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

I've never stayed in a cabin, but there's a funny part on the Andre Crouch Live in London LP. It's between songs and Andre is talking about going to Heaven before they sing 'Just like He said He would'. He says, "Somebody one time sang (and he then sings)...Lord build me a cabin in the corner of Glory Land" (a bunch of people in the audience and some of his backup singers begin to shout in agreement), and then he says, "I don't even like cabins!" (and you can sense their embarrassment as everyone else laughs) "But Jesus said that I have a MANSION for you! And it's not made by any man". That's my cabin story. Don't throw tomatoes.

Now for trees. I love trees. My favorites are found in the Hawaiian Islands and probably in other parts of the world. My favorite has to be the Plumeria tree, which comes in lots of varieties. I also love the lemon-scented gum trees that you find hiking along the crest of the Koolaus above Punahou and Aiea. The Paper-bark Eucalyptus are a hiker's friend when you have to go real bad and have no TP. There are these one trees that grow out of the black lava fields between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, and they have red bristly flowers that add color to the moon-like landscape. Hawaii is full of the best foliage from all over the world all brought to one place. You must check it out sometime.

I like cabins.

The only good tree is a dead tree.

How do I follow that? Shocked

Ok, I have a cabin story ~ well, actually it's MF's story but I doubt he'll be around to tell it so I hope I get it right.

He and some friends went hiking on the Appalachain Trail for a few days. One night they found this old deserted cabin and decided it would be good shelter that would save them the time and trouble of setting up their tents. After they went to bed they started hearing all these little scurrying sounds. They turned on their flashlights to see a bunch of mice (could've been rats), running everywhere. He and another guy were hitting them with shovels, but they kept running so they didn't get many of them. Big Grin

Another cabin story ~ MF and I stayed in a little cabin for our honeymoon. It was a little one bedroom cabin with a corner fireplace. The food we had for dinner that night was horrible, but there wasn't much choice in that little town in the mountains. We returned another year and planned to take food with us so our dinner was much better. We also stayed in another cabin for our anniversary once. It was a great place as it had a sleeping loft. I was just a little disappointed that they only had a shower in it and since it was winter, the only heat they had was a little portable electric heater so it was quite cool when we woke up in the morning. The funny thing was that here we were in this little rustic looking cabin and they had satellite tv.

Trees? I like a big oak tree, something lacking in this part of our state. In the mountains we always had oak trees in our front yard. Here we don't have any. Crying All we have are these horrible tall (50-60 ft tall) pine trees. Red Face We've had 2 hellacious storms of late and now one of them is leaning. Another one is dead and it's imminent (or would that be eminent?) that they'll both fall if we have too many more of those battering storms. Hopefully MF can find someone to take em down soon.

I like trees, but trees like oak and pine.

I don't like all the palm trees here. They don't really give shade and they are loved by roaches. Ick.

Are you one of the oaks, or just a fan? I couldn't help but notice that the spelling on their space is horrendous...I couldn't read a single word!

Woo-HOOOO! Yeah! 200 posts...I'm a border collie! Can I be Kerouac, like on the movie 'Down and Out in Beverly Hills'? That was one smart dog. The only reason I remember is because Andy Summers did the soundtrack, which I own on CD, and one of the songs is titled Kerouac.

I once stayed in this cabin (when i was eight or something) that looked really old like it was about to fall down. i slept upstairs and I kept having these dreams that the second floor was going to fall down on the first and then i would have to rescue the people on the first floor (if i didn't get hit by the roof when it caved in). the problem was that i was too little to lift the boards to save them so then i would have to call for help and then a helicopter came to rescue them and take them to the hospital and it left me behind! i was so traumatized by the dreams that i didn't go back into the cabin the next day unless absolutely necessary.

my relatives had this huge tree branch that fell down in their yard. they had 12 kittens at the time and it was so funny to watch them climbing all through it and slipping and sliding and falling off the branches (it had just rained).

i also fell out of a tree once and fell on my wrist and it hurt like the dickens but my mom said i'd be just fine (cause i wasn't bawling like most kids) and i couldn't write with that hand for about a week. i still don't know what i did to it.

anyways, those were my cabin, tree, tree stories.

Cabins and trees... Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

For out honeymoon, my wife and I were given a gift by our boss at the time. (We both worked at Chick-Fil-A, it's were we met. We were 20 yrs. old when we married.) The gift was a cabin in Rome, Georgia on the campus of Berry College. Berry is know for being the largest college, acre wise, in the world. To get to the cabin we had to go down a road called 3 Mile Drive, because it's 3 miles of nothing but trees. It was dark when we got there and for us city dwellers, the darkness was quite an experience. The cabin was furnished in what I'd call "Little house on the prairie" style. Stong furniture made of good wood. No TV, radio. In the morning we were greeted by a wonderful sunrise as we went out to take a look at the grounds. It was like something out of a story-book. A couple of rolling hills, shade trees, lush green grass and we even had a babbling brook! We spent 3 days and 2 nights and then went to Gattlinburg, TN. to stay a nice resort for a week. When we got there and opened the door to our townhouse my wife said "Thank goodness! A TV!!!" I looked over at her and said "I'm happy you said something, I thought I was a bad person for thinking the same thing." Natures great, but a man needs his ESPN... Big Grin

Cabin story Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

My wife and I rented a cabin in Big Sur for one night of our honeymoon in December 1997. It was a quaint little place with a comfy bed, clean sheets and a fireplace. They even provided us with a bundle of almond wood to burn, which we dug right into since this was Christmastime on the coast. The little paper in the wrapper claimed that almond wood was "a better alternative to those other hardwoods". Perhaps that would be true if you were building, say, a fireproof house or something. This crud wouldn't burn for anything! We used half a box of matches trying to get it to ignite. We were getting colder and colder, and nothing would make this pile of wood burn.

Finally I went out to my car in the cold night air and rummaged through it to see what I could find. Our practical-joker friends had filled the sun visors of the car with cereal, which rained down upon us when we got in the car after the wedding ceremony. Thankfully, they had left both of the empty cereal boxes in the car. I also found a copy of the local newspaper under the back seat. So, armed with the Yucaipa News-Mirror, two spent Cookie Crisp boxes, and the paper wrapper the wood came in, we were finally able to get the ding-dang almond wood to ignite before we froze to death.

As you might imagine, that "better alternative" schtick is still an occasional joke between us...
