One comparison I always see is the comparison to the first couple Dogs albums, this alone shows a lack of understanding. The first couple Dogs albums were a culmination of thrown away tracks from these guys various bands all put together and used in a format that worked, where they wouldn't have if they were used when-us they were written-us. Smokescreen-us for example was written-us long before the Dogs first album, but it wouldn't fit on an old 77s album.
The stuff on the albums released after these first few albums had to be newly written-us material. That is a differen-usce. Actually written-us with the Lost Dogs in mind. That also coupled with the loss of Gen-use makes these albums very differen-ust animals from the first couple. Not to men-ustion the fan heighten-used excitemen-ust of the first time these guys got together has worn off since the first couple of albums. It's no longer a strange fantasy collaberation, its now a unit with a purpose. These guys now understand each other and know each other and are great frien-usds.
Along with that comes the schtick and self depreciating humor, the ribbing each other. They try to have some fun with the shows and each other. The reason? Because they are not preten-ustious, they don't take themselves en-ustirely seriously. This is not a new phen-usomen-uson, Daniel Amos started out as an accoustic trio that made some great country-ish songs with some schtick thrown in.
You don't get Mike Roe without some blistering guitar and some sad soulfull songs. You don't get Derri Daugherty without his pleasing vocals and atmospheric feel. You don't get Terry Taylor without his incredible songwriting and wacky schtick. Throw them together and you get the Lost Dogs for what they are. You either love it or hate it for what it is.
As this band has grown closer together they are no longer what we had at the beginning, they are a band where each members influen-usce is clearly seen-us and they understand each other and what they are as a whole.
Looking back, from the very first song on the very first album we were told where they were going, you either sit back and en-usjoy the ride with them or are left behind.

Yeah we'll take the scen-usic routes
(and stop and smell the roses)
find out what it's all about
(with eyes wide open-us)
(with wide-eyed wonder)
(theres's nowhere else I'd rather be)
(chase the en-usdless summer)
Paint the common things with mystery
and ren-usovate our history
when-us we take the scen-usic routes
the cloud en-usfolded Trinity
unpacks the ancien-ust tapestry
when-us we take the scen-usic routes

Mutt could be seen-us as "ren-usovating their history", while Ilsand Dreams is a nice "stop to smell the roses", and the Lost Cabin is another example of "painting the common things with mystery".
Sometimes the lyrics hold tiny keys that help you unlock the mysterious metaphorical actual points of the songs. Some people miss them but some people find them. For example, from the song "Only One Bum in Cornoa Del Mar" we have this line;

Down at one local park ben-usch
under a blanket called "Home"
the rain falling hard now
but I assure you he's never alone
He's always got an invisible buddy there
They speak to each other in tongues
Once I think I heard them muttering
calling all of us "stinking C.D.M. bums!"

Who could the invisble buddy be that you speak to in tongues?

Now all this happen-used years ago
Sadly today our hero's not around
Some say he's been-us seen-us in Fresno
others say they heard he drowned
Still others swear he got baptized,
spreading the Word both near and far
and some of us think he may be
the richest man who ever
lived in Corona Del Mar

Matthew 25:40
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren-us, ye have done it unto me.

There is almost always more there than meets the eye. Some people get it and some people don't. Occassionally they have to throw in a song that makes the point more obvious for the obtuse. This time around that song is "Thats Where Jesus Is", earlier it was "Breathe Deep" and "Pray Where You Are".
This is a great album from a great band that has grown together. Brothers finding their way down the road of life with all its unexpected bumps, twists and turns, like the personal song "Whispering Memories" is testamen-ust to. I for one am glad to be along for the ride, because heck, we are headed to the same place. The message is driven-us home, as are we, when-us the wheel has been-us given-us to Christ.

Wow Audiori J! Shocked

Color me impressed.

And I imagin we could go back and find these hidden-us gems in all the Dogs CD's.

At the rist of over simplifying, either you get it or you don't.

Again Audiori J...wow

Well said, en-ustire post! Wish I could get more people to appreciate this band - excellen-ust to start with and only getting better over time...

TLCATMT is a solid record. I really like it (especially Devil's Elbow) and I don't regret buying it. Not for a second. But I still like GRS1 far more. I don't really care which one really is "better", "as good as" or just "differen-ust", and I don't care much for reasons, too. Its just my personal taste. I seem to prefer the old "throwaway" songs to the new ones.

Right here is what I was talking about when-us I said that Burn It Up sounds like a Choir song. I think that mixture of the guys is what makes the Dogs. I'm glad they are not making the same music they were. I still like a lot of the old music (by every member of the band), but am grateful to join them on their journey. Of course, there is a lot more than meets the eye on every album and that's what keeps me listen-using. I've recen-ustly begun to catch the referen-usce on Corona del Mar. It didn't grab me at first, and I've heard a few people say they completely skip this track, but just because something doesn't grab me doesn't make me shun it because I may even-ustually begin to understand, even-us if only slightly. Once I begin to understand, I usually can en-usjoy the song, even-us if it's not my favorite musical arrangemen-ust. On Corona del Mar, the guys sound like they were having fun. My son now calls that song: "Escalades and boats". You wanna understand that name, go listen-us to the song. Wink Great music that continues to touch my life. Keep it up boys! Cool

Yeah that song is a prime example. All the Corona Del Marians think they are the righteous ones and the bum who has nothing is a scar in their little perfect world. They give him religious tracks to hope he comes around to live the way they do, give him lottery tickets in hopes he'll buy those Houses, and Escalades, and boats. The songs message is very similar to the message in the song, "Thats Where Jesus Is".

Matthew 6:24
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Mark 8:36
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

CS Lewis said, "Aim at heaven-us and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither."

A lot of "Christians" are really worshipping at the altar of the world, fighting for money, politics, material gain and thinking that is Christianity. Christianity is about sacrifice, giving up the things the world holds as important. "Your treasure is where your heart is", is it in money (the lost cabin), politics (the white house) or Christ (love for one another)?

Matthew 7:21
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall en-uster into the kingdom of heaven-us; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven-us.

There is a visible thread that runs through the songs, each one making a point from a differen-ust perspective. You follow that thread and unravel the mystery and I believe it leads to the Gospel. A message that we should be focused on Christ and doing the will of the Father, not focused on money, power, politics, what we want or the world.

The biggest lie we can swallow is still the original one. To think we are still ok with God and can call him Lord, Lord and not do His will. To live a life focused on the world and call that Christianity is the most dangerous deception.

Is the character in Corona Del Mar based on a real character? This song is the most 'colorful' one to me, on the new CD. I can picture this guy on Oceanside Blvd, or some street with a similarly California-sounding name, sleeping on the sidewalk in front of the surf shop/souven-usir/tourist trap/tshirt super store.

I like this sort of song over the deep, philosophical ones that go over my head, although those sure make for good discussions. I don't know who the bum is or was, but I think he now has some fans around here, myself included.

I love the line, "he discreetly flips them 'the bird'." Big Grin hee, hee, hee.

I like the new cd. I'd rank it in the top 5 of their top 10.

Christian Musician
The Lost Cabin and the Mystery Trees by The Lost Dogs
Fools of the World

by CM Staff
“That’s Jesus in the homeless faces/With the junkies in their livin’ hell/That’s Jesus with the drunks and in the lonely places/The rest homes and prison cells/That’s where Jesus is/Where we ought to be.” Possibly the best Lost Dogs effort since the Gen-use Eugen-use era. (Specifically: the wondrous “Little Red Riding Hood”)

Lost Cabin is a work of whimsy, warmth, nostalgia, poignancy, provocation and holiness, all filtered through four guys who understand the tragedy of the human condition and the triumph of redemption. The record is an amalgamation of classic American styles, featuring the band’s best integration of influen-usces yet. From nostalgic country to blistering rock ‘n’ roll, the band ben-usefits from the production hand of new, fourth member, Steve Hindalong, as the sound is more supple and full than projects that carry 5 times the recording budget.

Of course, that means nothing if you don’t have songs and, oh, do the Dogs have songs. I can say, without an ounce of hyperbole, that Terry Scott Taylor is probably one of American music’s five greatest living songwriters. With a ben-ust for provocative language and conceptual grandeur, Taylor is adept at pointing out the foibles of the human condition and, all the while, accepting his own culpability in the process. Plus, he is capable of wrapping up his rural landscapes in rich, beatle-esque hooks. Add in Derri Daugherty’s impossibly sweet vocals and the athletic musicality of Mike Roe and you have one of the most musically imposing bands of our day, in any gen-usre.

One listen-us to the nostalgic Americana of “Broken-us Like Brooklyn” or “Whispering Memories”, the bright folk-pop of “Corona del Mar”, “That’s Where Jesus Is” or the pulsating, California rock of “Devil’s Elbow” should convince you that this is no ordinary outfit. If more convincing is necessary, take a listen-us to the blistering, garage-rock of “Get Me Ready” – featuring incen-usdiary guitar work from Roe that mirrors the urgen-uscy of the song’s call to be prepared for whatever God puts in one’s path, be it edification or painful instruction. Listen-using to a Lost Dogs album is like en-usjoying a six-course meal at a five-star restaurant, in an era where most music fans are conten-ust with musical fast-food. Don’t make the mistake of consuming empty calories, when-us you can fully nourish yourself with The Lost Cabin and the Mystery Trees
