Cool Local Church Talent

I wanted to start a discussion away from the "New Dogs CD" thread, so that it didn't turn into a dispute on church music.

But on the church music topic.....The church I attend has 3 different groups of musicians that rotate shifts in each month, and their styles vary a bit, although the song selection doesn't vary much.

The best group consists of a couple of the best guitarists I've ever heard in a church, along with the guy at my old church in ALbany, Ga who was guitarts with Tommy James for a while.

Anyway, these guys totally rock, but at the same time, their hearts are so into what they do...the praise & worship is IN the praise & worship service. These fellas used to have a locally famous rock band in the St. Louis area back in the 70's, called Mama's Pride, and they just did a reunion gig at the Pageant recently. (Danny is the lead vocalist, and our song leader) I have often thought that if the Dogs ever wanted to add a guitarist...either of these dudes would fit right in, and Terry could feel some relief on the "Old" jokes and wise-cracks.

But the good news is that they are in the process of writing songs to be put into production for a CD in the next 6 months. When they come available, I would like to buy several to be distributed amongst the other Mutts here at the Dog Pound. Does that sound cool?

Does anyone else have a similar situation at their church?

Not really, but the music leader at a friends Church in Chesterfield was a guy in the band September if you know them. I also think one of the guys from Allies is in the St Louis area.

Our Church mixes hymns with praise and worship quite a bit, and there is a 'band' of sorts. I like a mixture. I don't really want one of any certain style every sunday morning. They do an occassional Rich Mullins song, or even have done a Steve Hindalong song at times. The pastors daughter sang Terry's song from City on Hill Christmas. Smile Even though, they don't seem to know who any of these men are. Roll Eyes

the music at my church is outstanding.

lots of different styles - folk, rock, blues, bluegrass, soul, world, etc.

it's insane how much skilled gift is represented each week.

i don't take it for granted. i am very thankful.

we do a variety of songs, some of which are by some Dogs' members.

Everybody in our church, including me, lacks any musical talent...

I'm an average guitar player and a poor bassist on my good days, and our pastor (not a member of our worship team) was a good choir singer twenty years ago. Everybody else is fighting to find his note or chord. I keep trying to teach those who are interested in the basics of a few instruments, but couldn't find any extraordinary talents yet.

Our worship leader is pregnant and with her family in Thailand right now. So the worship leading is on rotation, and the leader chooses from a pool of musicians, singers and songs. During the last months we mostly had acoustic guitar, bass (me), congas and at least three singers. When I lead worship I love to include electric guitar, piano and drums (and a few good songs). Last sunday we only had acoustic guitar and one microphone.

Nonetheless, despite the lack of musical talent, our church worship is always a great, spirit- filled experience. I just wouldn't want to hear a recording of it.

Good to hear that our church is not the only one that might be struggling a bit.

Posted by pmac on 08-09-2006 at21:42:

Probably the talent available in many churches is proportional to the size of the congregation; I visited a friend's megachurch outside of Houston... similar to mo_jojo's situation - three different bands, one was really top-tier. (Great music, but the size of the place wasn't my cup of tea...)

We fall somewhere between there and Alex's situation (ok, there's a big gap in there Wink )... we used to have two mediocre (but dedicated!) praise teams that alternated every other week... but both teams felt like it hindered progress to be taking every other week off.

So, we're down to one with a couple folks rotating in and out (drummers switch every week), with probably too many people on stage (6 singers, 3 guitars, drums, bass, piano, keyboard, sax/oboe). We're mostly average amateurs, although we have two brothers - bass and drums - that are quite excellent.

I sing and on extremely rare occasion play a low whistle; one of the guitarists has a mandolin, and I've been trying to convince our interim leader to get a bagpipe player involved for an occasional Celtic tune, but she's resistant to going beyond guitar/drums/keys.

The vast majority of what we do are praise choruses.... like I mentioned on the "other" thread, it would be nice to mix more styles in, but I don't see that happening maybe until we fill our open worship leader spot.

My church is an exception. I attend a church in B'ham that has a small congregation (20-30) of mostly elderly people, but our choir is great.
We have 10 people in our choir, 5 of which are excellent singers. We have a great blend.

Alex, you sell yourself short as a musician! I think that what you do is annointed to reach a certain crowd, and I love what I've heard so far. Keep up the good work, as I know you will, bro.

You church sounds like one I attended after my dad found his way to Heaven. You should be proud, as I'm sure you are.

I was in grade school, and we attended a small store-front church called Maranatha Assembly in the south part of the city, much like the one my dad had pastored. The pastors here were in their late 60's but sold-out to God and serious about the ministry. The congregation was a bouillabaisse of society, but mostly low-income middle aged ladies and plenty of kids, as well as a drunk or two that happened by a late service. The music was that of Sister Riddle playing the upright piano and the designated songleader doing his or her best to lead the off-key members in the sacred classics. A tambourine or two were always present, and occasionally us kids would get to play our band instruments from school (they were pretty generous to tolerate that!).
Off-key, but powerful, was the praise in that house! Some of the best I've ever been priviledged enough to be a part of, IMHO. I think God might have been pleased with the sincerity of that group, despite our lack of skill, training, and equipment.

I learned from that Godly woman, Sister Riddle, who was also my Sunday School teacher, and she is one of those whom I look forward to greeting up in Heaven one day very soon. I hope you'll all find some time to come over and meet this saintly lady from England who taught a small boy about the virtues of serving a Living Lord who reigns supreme.

Thank you. I am proud of our church, it's a small but good one.

In our service today I led worship on the electric guitar (clean sound), my wife sang 2nd vocal, and a friend of ours improvised with the saxophone to us. People took several percussion instruments from a basket and joined in with tambourine, hand- drum, shaker, etc. We spontaneously included the chorus of "Breathe deep" in one of the songs... it was a great experience once again. Spirit- filled, heart- touching, powerful, releasing, encouraging and more than a few times completely out of tune (especially the sax). I love it.

and they are good songs. maybe even great songs.

if i lived in louisville, i know where i would be going to church.

Posted by the fifth dog on 08-15-2006 at01:29:

the church i regularly visit has made the quality of music inferior. they used to stress the importance of good music but somehow stopped stressing it. which has made me learn to focus on the reason i worship more than on just the niceness of the songs.

altho grief, i miss good church music.

Posted by mo_jojo on 08-15-2006 at08:46:

Doesn't it make you wonder (and look forward to) how excellent the "church music" in heaven will be???

I want to play a harp or an electric guitar. I always loved watching Harpo Marx play the harp in their old movies. He made the harp sound like the most wonderful instrument I ever heard, and truly worthy of its Heavenly stereotype.

I don't know if people who didn't take the time to learn the skill here on Earth will be granted the skills in Heaven, but if so, I will play with all my might.

When I was a kid I thought heaven might be the most boring place where we have to sing "Hallleluja" all day until eternity.

Now I look forward to do just that. I know it's gonna sound great.

A number of years ago, during the days of Allies, Bob Carlisle was a worship musician at our church. So was Andrae Crouch well before that. The few old-timers who remain like to kid us now and then about the way worship *used* to be. All things considered, though, our current team is pretty darned good. I wish the leaders were a bit more judicious in selecting material sometimes; they lean towards the "flavor of the month" a bit too much for my tastes. (I still fear that they're going to bring in Matt Redman's awful "You Never Let Go" sometime soon.)

I had previously spent ten years at a church where I was the only bass player on hand, ever, and one of the only two trained musicians on the team. Fortunately the others had excellent ears and open minds for the most part. My current church is pretty much in the same boat except that we have two regular bass players, plus one of the worship leaders dusts off her bass now and then. Man, it's nice to have a weekend off sometimes (except that I usually get talked into playing saxophone on those Sundays)! We also have four drummers in rotation, three of which are girls. I guess that's not as rare as it used to be, though.

Why do you dislike that song?

Posted by epistrophy on 08-19-2006 at18:54:

  You Never Let Go

<< Why do you dislike that song? >>

Amateurish construction, mostly. In "Blessed Be Your Name" Redman took one of the more daunting, worship-unfriendly sections of Scripture and managed to make an excellent, creative song out of it. This one just sounds like he was trying to dig up another scripture to build his next hit around.

From a purely mechanical songwriting perspective, it's totally lame to repeat "you never let go" as often as he does in the chorus. The rule of thumb is that the more a phrase repeats, the more it seems like the songwriter had nothing else to say. "Every high and every low" merely sounds like he was trying to find a rhyme for "go". Also, in the chorus he keeps talking about God holding on to us, yet in the second verse and bridge he talks about "a light coming for the heart that holds on". So all of a sudden someone else is holding on instead of God? Why the shift?

The melody is pretty boring, too. About the only interesting section harmonically is the pre-chorus ("I will fear no evil"). All in all, I think it's about the least interesting song Redman has ever come up with on record. But because it's Redman, we'll be hearing it on the radio for the next decade...

(Your mileage, of course, may vary!)

Thanks for filling me in.

It's funny. I actually love that song. I think it's pretty awesome.

But, it's always interesting to hear a viewpoint from another angle. Thanks!
