It Came from the Basement!

It's been awhile since there has been news of the Lost Dogs Route 66 film project, and we appreciate your continued interest and support. Lo-Fidelity Records and the Lost Dogs are pleased to announce some movement on the project, and the release of a support DVD to kickstart it's completion.

In June of 2005, Lo-Fidelity promoted, filmed, and recorded a Lost Dogs performance in a basement home studio/rehearsal space in East Troy WI. It was the band’s first tour with then new member and drummer Steve Hindalong, and the first full tour that would include drums and electric guitars since the "Green Room Serenade" tour. All told, it seemed like an important event in the band’s history to want to capture. Despite careful planning, in true Lost Dogs fashion, the evening turned into a comedy of errors with a buzzing PA, cameras and recording gear that would start and stop on their own, heat in the studio that had the band and audience on the verge of passing out, and a performance that culminated with Mike accidentally breaking Derri's Fender Telecaster during a particularly raucous version of "Why Is The Devil Red?" Despite all the issues, the band played a remarkably focused and tight set, which gave hope that somehow the footage could be salvaged and used at a later date. Until recently, the question was how and when. As most Lost Dogs fans know, the band has been working on completing their Route 66 film project. Due to financial constraints, the project has been worked on in fits and starts, which led Lo-Fidelity to the idea of finally releasing It Came From The Basement as a fundraiser for the film. All of the basement footage was carefully edited and the audio mixed and restored for what is sure to be a classic Lost Dogs release.

Mike Roe says “For years, my memory of that basement concert was sheer hell ….. that is, until I watched the final cut of “It Came From The Basement”. Not only did it look like we were really enjoying ourselves, we played splendidly and rocked with something resembling reckless abandon. That performance, intercut with film footage culled from the goofy dark underbelly of American media archives, makes for one truly entertaining experience. Think "Elvira meets Mystery Science Theater at Cornerstone” and you’re gettin’ warm …"

Starting today, August 3, 2011, you can not only own a piece of Lost Dogs history, but help to complete the highly anticipated Route 66 film. Several support packages are being offered. Everything from a simple download of the audio from the performance, to a DVD package that contains a sticker, poster, guitar pics & buttons, a CD of the audio and your name as a Route 66 project supporter in the credits of the upcoming film. The proceeds of It Came From The Basement will go towards completing the Route 66 film and its release. At trailer containing a full performance of the track "A Certain Love" can be viewed on YouTube at the following link - http://tinyurl.com/3z6vdmo. Please know your ongoing support is key, and greatly appreciated.

The DVD and various support packages can be found from Lo-Fidelity Records. For those interested only in the DVD, stand alone copies can be purchased from www.thelostdogs.com .

"It's been almost 20 years since these strays found each other, but The Lost Dogs haven't lost an ounce of the playfulness, songwriting chops and uniquely eclectic approach that made their debut so memorable."

"It’s my belief that Old Angel reintroduces listeners to the band the Lost Dogs, gives up one of the best offerings they’ve ever made and positions them as one of the best Americana rockers you’ve likely never heard." (popdose)

"You don't so much listen to Old Angel as bask in its glow. It is a shimmering musical landscape mixing achingly beautiful melodies with a brilliant palette of musical styles and nuances. The album mixes influences ranging from old time rock'n'roll, folk, country, folk/rock, rockabilly, country/rock and Beach Boys harmonies into a cohesive whole." (Examiner.com)

Old Angel, the latest project from the Lost Dogs (Terry Taylor, Mike Roe, Derri Daugherty and Steve Hindalong) is a 15-song audio travelogue of the group's pilgrimage down Route 66— and may very well be their crowning achievement. Every song on this new record is a snapshot out the RV window. Some are blurry, some are faded, but all bear the yellowed patina of something like grace.

A wide-ranging musical palette of muscular modern rock tinged with old-timey Americana flavors reflects the ever-changing landscape as we tour the broken heartland with four master musicians and storytellers. The superlative songwriting from all four members, at times bordering on literature, covers an expansive time frame of American history from the Old West through the Great Depression to the day before yesterday. We are introduced to a diverse congregation of characters along this 2500-mile road trip: wandering Okies, homeless hobos, hope-filled Navajo children, brokenhearted waitresses and the legendary heroes of our common history. It’s an album of Polaroids, full of friends, family and otherwise unfamiliar faces, but by the end of the book, we know every story by heart.

The trip down what’s left of America’s Main Street is equal parts wonder and squalor and the Santa Monica Pier is no New Jerusalem but these boys share the adventure like a family slideshow carousel. Through one of their finest musical efforts in a career full of high notes, they help us find the joy in our journeys. Sure, the dust storms and potholes leave us weathered and sore and the gaudy kitsch almost turns nostalgia into parody but those who have ears to hear and eyes to see glimpse the ghosts of former glories around every broken bend in the old highway.

Thanks for the lift, boys.

Pilgrims On The Mother Road

At the tail end of the summer of 2008, with murmurs of great depression in the air, a band of great American musicians crammed themselves into an RV and took to Route 66, the Mother Road, much like the Okies in Steinbeck’s masterpiece, seeking something like a new home. It was a noble undertaking and a foolish lark. They didn’t really know what they were looking for, but they had hope that they would find it nonetheless in the journey itself.

They began in Chicago and followed the old broken highway as best they could for 2500 miles, through eight states in the tired heart of a once great land; mile by mile rediscovering bits and pieces of its former glory and collecting them as spiritual souvenirs. On this journey they encountered the vast congregation of the heartland and learned that the magic of the Mother Road flowed and still flows from the people who live on it and work off it and the souls who make their way upon it. Folks. Neighbors. Fellow travelers. The least of these my brethren. They received lessons in mercy, humility, hospitality, fortitude and grace from the salty, stalwart ilk of Americana lore and they glimpsed the face of Christ in the toothless grins of over-alled geezers and the hope-filled eyes of Navajo children.

The journey was not without its perils, however. Prayers for traveling mercies were offered both for themselves and for those with whom they shared the road, for the only way Mike could avoid being carsick was to drive and in keeping with their moniker they did get lost a few times; a few wrong turns here and there; a few missed turnoffs (notably that left turn in Albuquerque.) And Lord knows, sitting in a motor home for three weeks will give anyone the Grapes of Wrath, but by and large they wended their way further up and further in, following the setting sun.

By forsaking the broad road and sticking to the scenic routes the four Lost Dogs found their way home. Not necessarily a new home, for California is the home of their forefathers, the home of half-remembered childhoods and simpler devotion. But to find the old home afresh, and to see it with the eyes of the heart is to find a spiritual home, which is, after all, the whole point of pilgrimage.

Through a new album of songs inspired by this expedition, the Dogs are getting ready to share their home movies with us all. The lights are dim, the coffee’s brewing and the slideshow is ready to start. Fourteen snapshots of a pilgrimage on the Glory Road, the Main Street of American culture, and believe me, it’s never looked quite like this before.

ROUTE 66 - The Glory Road Tour

The Lost Dogs are back after their trek down Route 66, “The Glory Road.” It was undoubtedly the most rewarding experience on the road, ever, jumping off in Chicago and ending at the pier in Santa Monica, California. While visiting some of the most interesting places in America, their experiences were captured in music and film. Jimmy Abegg was the perfect choice to bring along as photographer, videographer, road manager, and all things in-between. He did an excellent job documenting each and every moment, capturing the spirit of the road in still photos and film. Those of you who received postcards can attest to his talent. Tom Gulotta joined the Dogs in New Mexico and added his own level of expertise. Jimmy and Tom have begun editing the hours and hours of film footage for the upcoming DVD. The end result will be a DVD that will be charming, whimsical, comedic, poignant, educational, and above all else, fun and entertaining.

Please be patient while the guys finish writing songs for the CD. We don't have a completion date yet. The DVD is an even bigger project and we’re going to take our time to make it more than simply a "fans only" release. The Lost Dogs are profoundly changed. There is a powerful sense of new vision, purpose and camaraderie. They became true brothers after sharing the road in a cramped RV for days on end. Each was melancholy at the end of the road, wishing to relive the entire trip again. Route 66 T-shirts are available in the webstore.

We will also be offering sets of postcards (set of 8 -- one postcard representing each state). We are getting ready to put the Waterstone guitars (used on the tour) and other memorabilia up for auction on Ebay. Lastly, we are keeping the donation options open until further notice. We are in dire need of funding to cover CD and DVD productions costs.

We want to thank all of you who have been extremely generous in your donations. This project became a reality because of you! Support The Lost Dogs as the journey becomes the music.

"The Lost Cabin and the Mystery Trees"

A message from The Lost Dogs, on the new tour and album: "On behalf of Terry, Derri, Steve and myself, we cannot wait to see and play for all of you again, especially the songs from our wonderful new album entitled "The Lost Cabin And The Mystery Trees". These eleven new songs are a gift from us to you -- we have never stayed up later or worked harder to bring you our very best. We think you'll agree with us that this one is terrific -- another 'classic' along the lines of "Gift Horse" or "Real Men Cry". Real drums (courtesy of Steve H.) Real bass (from the great Tim Chandler) Loud electric guitars (mine and Derri's) Even some loud obnoxious rock and roll (thanks to Terry this time!) Gorgeous melodies and ballads (from all of us). Yes, it's a winner..." - Mike Roe

"Hindalong told me on the phone the other night that this may be the best record he's ever participated on. 'Really?' I said with a laugh. I was waiting for the punch line. It never came. I think he might be right... at least it's right up there. I got teary-eyed listening to the rough mixes when I got back home from Nashville - not because it was sad music, (in fact, a couple of tunes are screamingly funny) but because some great friends had come together and created a true thing of beauty. I hope you guys like it. We worked hard to make it happen, but believe me when I tell you that you're all worth it." - Terry Taylor

"I must say it's one of the best things we've ever recorded. Terry's telling great stories and writing great songs, Steve, Mike and I also wrote great songs for the cd. Mike is singing like an angel, I'm still singing like a girl, Steve is drumming his butt off and keeping us on track. I've had a great time making this cd with my closest friends. I hope we keep doing this until we leave this world." - Derri Daugherty
